This is a great way to make extra money, and occasionally you can really make a killing doing this. In order to do this properly you have to know what the values of goods on your server are in order to know if you are getting a good deal. Get the add-on Auctioneer, which scans the Auction House and keeps track of prices on your server. Auctioneer makes this method of making money a breeze.

Try to rely on drops from mobs for your gear. The reason is, if you are constantly spending money at the Auction House trying to get better gear, it will take you that much longer to achieve whatever goal you have set for yourself.
